We honored our 2023 ACC Unite Award winners, Dr. Donald Spivey and Dr. Laura Kohn-Wood, on February 15 at the Schwartz Center.
Three athletic department staff members participated in the Miami HEAT’s Miami 162 recognition in honor of Black History Month. Nehemiah Peete (facilities), Jason Martin (Track & Field) and Marlon Clark (Marketing), joined over 200 Black men who took to the court to stand, honor and represent the original 162 Black men who participated in the 1896 vote to incorporate the City of Miami.
“I was one of many who were unaware of the story of the Miami 162. To now know that for Miami to have become a city, the town needed 162 Black male laborers to participate in the voting process. Those rights being immediately taken away after Miami became a city and not returned until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was eye opening. Having the honor to participate in such a powerful experience that honored those 162 black men, locked in unity and arms, in memory of the Miami 162 is something I’ll never forget and will be sure to teach those around me today and future generations.”

Have you had a ‘Welcome to The U moment? If so, what was it?
Yes! Walking through the Coconut Grove Art Festival for the first time and seeing every fifth person wearing some sort of UM gear was certainly an eye-opener to the brand impact that UM has established locally. It really is all about the U!
|
What led you to make the move to the Hurricanes?
So many reasons both personally and professionally. My family and I have lived in Miami the past five years, and it has become home. To learn from Jason Layton, alongside a great time, playing a key role in the revolutionary partnership expansion with Legends were all core reasons. I am also forever loyal to the U for the impact that Dr. Allesandri and the amazing team at UM CARD have made on my son’s life.
Who would you consider your biggest mentor?
My parents, as well as a mix of several leaders that I’ve worked under in the past: Travis Apple; Jamie Weinstein; Brian Towers.
Any family – significant other / kids / parents – notables to share?
Wife – Jeanna; Son – Chase; Dog – McGraw.
What are you looking forward to most as a new member of The U?
Ensuring an electric and sold-out environment at our home games through developing our sales/service staff, innovating industry best practices and, taking care of our fans by creating magic moments.

Happy National Nutrition Month 2024! This March, the annual campaign is titled "Beyond The Table", an initiative that goes beyond simply what's on our plates and encourages a holistic approach to nutrition and wellness.
"Beyond The Table" urges us to look beyond the nutritional content of our meals and consider the broader implications of our food choices. By embracing a more mindful approach to nutrition, we can nourish not only our bodies but also our minds and the planet. This campaign encourages us to make choices that support not only our personal health but also the sustainability of the environment.
Tips for Reducing Food Waste at Home
As part of National Nutrition Month, I’d like to share some practical tips to help you minimize food waste at home:
Plan Your Meals: Take a few minutes each week to plan your meals and create a shopping list. This can help you buy only what you need and reduce the chances of food going to waste.
Proper Storage: Store perishable items in the refrigerator promptly and at the correct temperature. Use clear containers to help you easily identify and use leftovers.
First In, First Out (FIFO): When unpacking groceries, move older items to the front of the fridge or pantry, ensuring they are used before newer purchases.
Creative Cooking: Get creative with leftovers! Transform yesterday's dinner into a new and exciting dish. This not only reduces waste but also adds variety to your meals.
Composting: Consider composting kitchen scraps instead of throwing them away. Composting not only reduces landfill waste but also creates nutrient-rich soil for your garden.
Understand Date-Labeling Phrases: Familiarize yourself with the difference between "use by," "sell by," and "best before" dates. These date labels are not safety dates, but rather pertains to when the food is at its best flavor/quality, or when the product needs to be sold for inventory management. Knowing this can help you make informed decisions about when to consume or discard food.
Remember, small changes in our daily habits can make a significant impact on both our well-being and the health of our planet. Let us celebrate National Nutrition Month by going "Beyond The Table" and embracing a lifestyle that nourishes not only ourselves but also the world around us.

Olympia Theater | Downtown Miami | Through March 31, 2024
The Art of Brick is an amazing exhibit you have to see to believe. Located in downtown Miami, it has impressed 10 million fans worldwide and now Miami gets the chance to be stunned by over 100 brick sculptures made from tiny LEGO® pieces by artist Nathan Sawaya. Family friendly fun!
Coconut Grove | Every Saturday until June 29, 2024
The Coconut Grove Farmers Market is probably Miami’s most well-known. Every Saturday, Homestead's Glaser Organic Farms transforms an unoccupied corner of Coconut Grove into a full-fledged produce market with dozens of fruit and vegetable stands, a raw bar featuring prepared foods and salads and coolers filled with cold-pressed juices and nut milks.
Hard Rock Stadium | March 17 – March 31 | Times Vary
Featuring our very own Miami women’s tennis team, the Miami Open is taking over the Hard Rock Stadium from March 17 through March 31. Beyond the Grand Slam tournaments in tennis — the U.S. Open, French Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon — the Miami Open and the Indian Wells Open in California are widely regarded as the premium tournaments in the sport, attracting the best gathering of men’s and women’s players.
